PSA for Tales of Symphonia Fans

It is okay to dislike or hate Dawn of the New World for anything ranging from “they changed it now it sucks” to legit crits of actual flaws in the game.

It is NOT okay to shit all over people who enjoy DotNW just because they like something you don’t.

There is a difference between admitting you don’t like something and telling somebody they would have to be high to like the thing you don’t like.

You don’t need to cram your head and shoulders up your ass to dislike DotNW. But SOME (*NOT* all) of you are suffering from a very severe case of cranial-rectal inversion. (This is actually a fairly common health problem in the Tales fandom.)

So, please. Let’s be civil and agree to disagree and go about the business of celebrating the Symphonia HD remaster instead of you bitching at DotNW fans because our game is included, okay?

Because there’s no point being mean—it’s not going to change a thing and just fosters resentment and anger. Instead, lets just party it up.

P.S.:

I know there is concern about the voices being changed. It’s okay to worry about that! But please be civil in your concern and remember that we don’t know for sure if they’re going to do any changes to the voice work in the original (or DotNW for that matter)

Also the above PSA applies here, too. You can be worried and angry about the voices without shitting on people who like DotNW.

Also, the time you spend hating is less time you could spend being happy about Lloyd and Friends in HD.

Emil

One of the more sad characters from the Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World characters.

This is one of the scenes everyone forgets about because it’s in the beginning of the game and doesn’t play that crucial of a point in the story-line. Thus, giving it a backseat to the rest of the game.

However it is crucial if you want to understand Emil’s personality.

After the beginning of the game, we’re shown a character who’s parents have died by the very person who everyone claims to be a hero. (This is before you know that Lloyd was being played by Decus) However, because of what you know to be true, are considered vile and unjust causing feelings of hatred towards you.

This character is also given an introduction which his aunt does not stand up for him, but push him to stop apologizing and insults him. Probably trying, in her own way, to get Emil to stand up for himself.

Afterwards, when you finally stand up for yourself, we see that the towns people pay even less respect to someone who is just speaking what they think to be true. Despite how right or wrong it may be, Emil’s thoughts and how he speaks is not accepted and Emil is alienated.

After this scene is done, Emil begins to get courage by a strange man who helped him stand up for himself, claiming that Emil should try and do this more often, and the game continues.

Going to skip a few paces here for time/length sake…

And Emil decides that he will stand up for himself and go check out the lakebed from the monster. He wants to know what’s happening. When he get’s out there, he finds Marta who once again reminds him that he needs to stand up for himself but once he’s about to go back to the village, he meets his uncle.

And completely crumples.

Notice how from before, he was starting to act a bit more courageous? And then, just from his Uncle being there, his attitude changes entirely. And when we get this cutscene it is explained.

Emil himself was actually hit by his uncle, more than likely abused constantly and blamed for most of the troubles his Aunt and Uncle had. This part is just speculation, but by the word structure ‘Uncle Alba was really angry. I wonder if he’ll hit me again.’ we can guess that this has happened not only on multiple occasions, but when his Uncle was mad.

Thus, when something bad happened.

This may not seem like much, but let’s re-cap. Why has Emil apologized so far? When people got mad, when things seemed to be going wrong or bad. Thus, him trying to take action and put himself in the shoes of whatever the fault was and apologize to make it better, even though he does not want to be pushed around.

He’s the scapegoat. Of the entire village, not just his uncle, though his uncle is part of the main force that traumatizes him.

And yet, later on, we see him standing up for the village instead of for Marta who had actually been for him instead.

This is one of the main key developments of Emil, and nobody seems to catch it. And those who do are usually alienated and ignored because of how Emil begins to act later in the game. Hey, everyone.

Emil is still that broken boy who had to deal with ALL OF THE VILLAGE’S ANGER. The only person we see supporting him (or at least not verbally abuse him) is the Mayor of Luin, who even admits that he didn’t particularly like Emil either later on in the game.

ISN’T THIS FAN-FRICKING TASTIC

Sorry, Mun rambles.

One reason I think this scene is overlook is that it’s an optional skit so people who just blow through or ignore skits don’t even realize it exists.

But seriously, FUCKING THIS.  NOBODY SEEMS TO FUCKING CARE THAT HE WAS VERBALLY AND PHYSICALLY BULLIED  BY THE ENTIRE DAMN VILLAGE AND THAT HIS OWN SUPPOSED FAMILY VERBALLY AND PHYSICALLY HARMED HIM.

One of the ways in which people deal with bullying and/or abuse IS to become doormats, hoping that if they say sorry long and hard enough that they’ll escape with as light a punishment as possible instead of being hurt again.

It’s not the only way, but it’s definitely one of the ways real people deal with these kinds of situations.  But people like to completely ignore the reasoning for Emil’s behavior and instead just attack him for it.

Meh.  Much as I really wished it would have been true, and I can see logic behind this being true someday, I’ve had my reasons to have no real faith in the rumor getting confirmed.  We can always hope in the future, though~

And this is why, no matter how deeply I want something and how excited I can get over rumors, I’m always careful not to get too attached to them~

A shame, though.  I’d like to see my first Tales game and the first game that honestly got me involved in the fandom and the series get this treatment someday.

Of course…  He didn’t exactly outright say “nope absolutely not”.  Well, we’ll see what happens.  In the meantime, I’mma continue hoping without getting terribly attached to said hopes.  ’tis the best wait to avoid heartbreak, after all.
